California school boards take on Newsom

The California School Boards Association (CSBA) has filed a lawsuit against Gov. Gavin Newsom’s administration, claiming that the recent state budget deal violates Proposition 98, which mandates funding for schools and community colleges. CSBA argues that the budget’s reduction of Prop. 98 funding from $106.3bn to $97.5bn constitutes a constitutional violation. Albert Gonzalez, CSBA president, stated: “CSBA’s defense of voter?approved Proposition 98 is non?negotiable.” The lawsuit does not affect the current budget but raises concerns about future funding vulnerabilities. The California Department of Finance, represented by Joe Stephenshaw, maintains that its actions were legal and constitutional. The lawsuit highlights the complexities of state budgeting, especially in light of unexpected revenue shortfalls due to recent natural disasters.
