Denver schools face tough closures

At a community meeting at South High School, over 100 attendees listened as Denver Public Schools (DPS) officials discussed the necessity of school closures due to declining enrollment. Superintendent Alex Marrero stated: “We don’t have enough scholars to fill our buildings, and that’s the harsh reality.” A list of recommended closures will be released on November 7, with a school board vote scheduled for November 21. While the district aims to address educational inequities, many parents expressed concerns about the short timeline for decisions and the impact on communities of color. Marrero acknowledged the pain of the process, saying: “It is painful… but after year one, year two, we see the benefits.” The meeting highlighted the financial challenges of under-enrolled schools, which cost more per student to operate.
