History teachers prioAccording to a new report from the American Historical Association, U.S. middle and high school history teachers prioritize developing informed citizens and presenting multiple perspectives on historical events. The report, which includes a 50-state analysis and a survey of 3,000 educators, counters claims of liberal indoctrination in classrooms. Jonathan Zimmerman, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania, stated: “They’re not waving the flag, but they’re also not trampling on the flag.” Key findings show that the Civil Rights Movement and the American Revolution are emphasized, while teachers express a need for more training on other topics, particularly Native American history. Additionally, 85% of teachers create their own materials, favoring free online resources over traditional textbooks. The report highlights the importance of inquiry-driven lessons, though some teachers struggle with effectively implementing them. |
