New York City Mayor Eric Adams has appointed Melissa Aviles-Ramos as the new schools chancellor, effective January 1, 2025, following the retirement of Chancellor David Banks. Aviles-Ramos, the highest-ranking Latina in the public school system, has played a crucial role in supporting migrant students. During the announcement, she asked educators “to see me as a symbol of stability,” emphasizing her commitment to the role. Adams and Banks assured that the succession plan was in place before the recent federal investigations into Adams’ administration. Aviles-Ramos has a rich history in the education sector, starting as a high school English teacher in 2007 and progressing through various leadership roles. Her return to the Education Department was part of a planned transition, as both Adams and Banks noted that discussions about Banks’ retirement had been ongoing. The challenges ahead for the new chancellor are significant, especially given the political climate surrounding Adams’ administration.
