Tutoring programs rely on AmeriCorps to address learning loss

Two years after the launch of the National Partnership for Student Success and Accelerate, initiatives aimed at addressing pandemic-related learning loss and enhancing student well-being, the role of AmeriCorps has proven essential. AmeriCorps members across the United States have been integral in implementing high-dosage tutoring and supporting evidence-based educational strategies in schools, particularly in underserved communities. AmeriCorps volunteers have been critical in programs like Joyful Readers in Philadelphia, where they provide daily tutoring to young students, and Math Corps, which offers math tutoring across Minnesota, Mississippi, and New York to set students on a STEM career path. Additionally, the Minnesota Alliance With Youth’s Promise Fellows program utilizes AmeriCorps members to tackle chronic absenteeism by engaging directly with students and families to improve attendance and academic success. However, these crucial educational efforts face a significant threat as the House has proposed severe cuts to AmeriCorps funding. Such a move could drastically reduce the number of volunteers available to assist in these programs, potentially impacting hundreds of thousands of students at a critical time in their educational journeys.
