Homelessness crisis hits NYC students

Roughly one in eight students in New York City’s public school system faced homelessness during the 2022-23 school year, according to a report by Advocates for Children. The analysis revealed that over 146,000 students experienced temporary housing, marking a significant increase of 26,000 from the previous year. Jennifer Pringle, director of the Learners in Temporary Housing Project, noted that “students in shelters are disproportionately impacted by transportation issues,” complicating their ability to attend school. The report also highlighted that half of the students in temporary housing were chronically absent, and their academic performance was notably lower than their peers. Schools are urged to enhance support for these students, requiring additional staff and resources to address their unique challenges effectively.
