Black students in Marin County are set to meet with Assemblymember Damon Connolly to advocate for stricter laws against racist behavior in schools. The online meeting, scheduled for Thursday, will include members from Black student unions at local high schools. Emily Uhlhorn, a trustee from Tamalpais UHSD, emphasized the importance of addressing racist acts, saying: “I think it’s a huge issue of why racist acts aren’t called out.” The students propose an amendment to the state education code that would explicitly define and prohibit racist behavior, calling for disciplinary actions and educational programs to combat racism. Superintendent Tara Taupier noted that the amendment would highlight the seriousness of such acts, aligning with California’s commitment to diversity and equity. Activist Terrie Green shared personal experiences of racism affecting students, urging for more serious measures to address the issue.
