School bus maintenance insights for 2024

The 2025 School Bus Fleet survey highlights significant trends in school bus maintenance for the 2024-25 school year. Notably, propane usage surged by 46%, indicating a shift towards alternative fuels. The average age of fleet buses has decreased to 8.3 years, the youngest in 15 years, while the average retirement age has also dropped. The driver shortage appears to be easing, with 32% of fleets reporting that their technicians never had to drive, up from 25% last year. However, parts and equipment prices remain a persistent concern, with no relief in sight. Technician pay has increased by 18.5% compared to last year, reflecting the ongoing staffing challenges. “Parts availability and the driver and tech shortage rank top on most fleets’ lists of concerns,” the report notes. Additionally, nearly 60% of fleets are now utilizing maintenance software, showcasing a growing trend in technology adoption.
