The Trump administration’s abrupt termination of $400m in federal funding to Columbia University has raised concerns among K-12 schools about potential similar actions. Derek Black, a law professor at the University of South Carolina, commented: “If you are going to be subject to arbitrary, unilateral punishment…there’s nothing you can do to avoid being punished.” This decision, described as a “first round of action,” reflects the administration’s aggressive approach to enforce political priorities through funding. Legal experts warn that this could lead to school districts altering their programs to align with the administration’s directives, even if they conflict with existing laws. The Education Department’s actions are unprecedented, with experts noting that such funding terminations are rare and typically follow a thorough investigation process.
