Arts education: a right, not a privilege

California’s Proposition 28 aims to enhance arts education access for all public school students. Create CA’s executive director emphasizes that “the arts are critical for a well-rounded education and student success.” However, some districts are reportedly not adhering to the law, leading to concerns about compliance. Successful districts, like San Gabriel USD and Long Beach USD, have effectively utilized Proposition 28 funds to expand arts programs. In contrast, allegations against Los Angeles USD suggest a violation of the proposition’s intent by replacing existing arts funding with new funds. As challenges persist, it is crucial for all districts to uphold the promise of Proposition 28, ensuring every student has access to arts education year-round.
