Teachers seek additional support and training for English learner instruction

According to a survey conducted by the EdWeek Research Center, teachers working with English language learners (ELLs) express a strong need for enhanced training in language instruction and engagement with multilingual families. The survey, which included 1,100 educators nationwide, highlighted that many general education teachers lack the necessary tools to effectively teach language through academic content. Additionally, the survey identified a significant gap in parent engagement, emphasizing the importance of proper translation services. A teacher noted: “Community outreach is the foundation of student achievement.” The survey also called for a shift in mindset to recognize multilingualism as an asset and to prioritize the safety and well-being of immigrant students.
