| According to a new report from the Center for Democracy & Technology, schools are inadequately addressing the rising threat of artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled sexual harassment. The report reveals that 40% of students and 29% of teachers are aware of deepfakes being shared in schools during the 2023-24 academic year. Kristin Woelfel, a policy counsel for the Center, stated: “The surface area for who can become a victim and who can become a perpetrator is significantly increased when anybody has access to these tools.” The report highlights a lack of awareness and support for victims, with only 19% of students knowing what deepfakes are and how to report them. Woelfel emphasizes the need for schools to focus on prevention and victim support rather than solely on punishment. Anjali Verma, National Student Council president, noted the traumatic impact of these incidents, urging for early education on digital safety. The survey included responses from over 3,000 students, teachers, and parents. |
