In July 2023, NOLA Public Schools marked a significant milestone with the ribbon-cutting of the last school building reconstructed after Hurricane Katrina, which devastated the city’s education system in 2005. The storm destroyed or severely damaged 110 of the 126 public school buildings, making their reconstruction a critical part of New Orleans’ recovery. The $2bn effort faced unprecedented logistical challenges, as federal regulations initially hindered rebuilding efforts. The project was complex, involving a phased approach to quickly revive neighborhoods, determine which schools to rebuild or refurbish, and navigate the city’s historic and racialized education landscape. The completion symbolizes a renewed commitment to improving educational conditions in New Orleans and showcases what can be achieved in the wake of disaster.
