First Student and Con Edison have launched a groundbreaking project in Brooklyn, introducing a fleet of 12 electric school buses equipped with solar panels. The initiative aims to create a smart energy hub that enhances the electrification of school buses while providing a scalable and cost-effective energy solution. The project not only replaces diesel buses but also integrates solar energy generation and battery storage, allowing for efficient energy delivery. First Student chief executive John Kenning stated: “Harnessing electricity from First Student electric school bus batteries to create an emissions-free smart energy hub… is truly revolutionary.” The initiative is expected to bolster local energy grids and promote clean energy usage, with plans to transition 30,000 fossil-fueled school buses to electric by 2035.
