Hegseth eyes overhaul of military achools

Pete Hegseth, a nominee for Defense Secretary, could reshape the Department of Defense Education Activity (DODEA) school system, which serves 67,000 military-connected children worldwide. Hegseth has long championed integrating patriotic education and Christian theology into the curriculum, aligning with principles from the Trump-era 1776 Commission. Conservative leaders view DODEA as a federal model for overhauling American education to counter what they describe as leftist ideology. Critics highlight Hegseth’s controversial past and question the need to revamp a system already lauded for academic excellence. Supporters, like Max Eden of the American Enterprise Institute, argue this is an opportunity to replace diversity and inclusion initiatives with classical education emphasizing Christian values, Greek and Latin studies, and “patriotic” history. DODEA spokesperson Will Griffin affirmed the agency’s commitment to providing quality education for military families but declined to address political implications. If confirmed, Hegseth’s vision could influence curriculum nationwide, with conservative states adopting similar educational reforms.
