A class action lawsuit has been filed against Miami-Dade County, Miami-Dade County Public Schools, and BusPatrol for failing to provide hearing dates for drivers who tried to contest their citation tickets. The complaint alleges that the camera program deprived citizens of their property without lawful justification and enriched the defendants at the expense of the public under questionable legal and ethical circumstances. The lawsuit alleges that 120,000 violation notices were issued since the start of the program, with 1,404 contestations filed by the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office since August. The complaint also alleges that the camera program is managed by BusPatrol and that there has been $19.5m from civil penalties, with 70% going towards BusPatrol and 30% to the school district. The company has stated that the class action suit is a frivolous and baseless attempt to undermine a critical student safety initiative in Miami and will continue to follow all state and local laws as they work in partnership with the sheriff’s office and school district to improve the safety of school children on buses.
